Teaching abroad is an amazing experience, but all good things come with its challenges. There comes a time in every new teacher’s life where chaos ensues, you may not speak the language, you may be lonely or you may simply be missing your favorite cookie butter from Trader Joes. Not to worry! We’re here to help you navigate these rocky and exciting waters. Here are some tips to avoid burnout while living abroad:

First, don’t forget to take breaks. It’s easy to get caught up in work, but it’s important to give yourself time to relax and recharge. Go for walks, explore your new surroundings, try the local ice cream, or just take some time to chill out at home. Rest is key!

Second, make sure you’re building a support network. Being far from friends and family can be tough, so try to connect with other expats, colleagues, or locals. Join social groups, attend events, or just strike up conversations with people you meet. Facebook expat groups are a great place to start.

Third, take care of yourself. Eat well, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. It’s also important to find ways to manage stress, whether that’s through meditation, journaling, or talking to someone about what’s bothering you.

And don’t forget to communicate with your colleagues and supervisors. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or struggling, don’t be afraid to reach out for help. They’re there to support you and can offer advice or resources to help you cope.

Finally, take time to appreciate the experience. Teaching abroad is an incredible opportunity, so make sure you’re taking time to enjoy it. Reflect on your experiences, celebrate your successes, and remember why you chose to teach abroad in the first place. By taking care of yourself and staying mindful of your needs, you can avoid burnout and make the most of your time abroad. Afterall, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Both you AND your students will be much happier!
