We’ve started our October Course, and we asked one of our trainees, Věra, a few questions about her experience during the course so far.

Where are you from and why did you choose this TEFL course?
I’m originally from Prague. I was born there, and I’ve spent most of my life in this beautiful Central European city. Nevertheless, I have lived and worked in the United States, mainly in Denver, Seattle, and New York City too. For quite a long time, I have been working as a freelance journalist for various media in Czech and English. I have written thousands of articles on a wide variety of topics, from education and art to business and travel. Sometimes I also teach specific classes on art, creative writing, media, or sociology. And because being a freelancer is not the easiest way of making a living these days, I have decided to make a career shift and focus more on my teaching practice. Therefore, the reason why I have chosen TEFL was very simple for me, as it gives a teacher full methodological structure and support, which I was looking for, and the possibility to teach abroad in the future.
How are you finding the course so far?
I am excited and totally busy. Time flies so fast that I almost forget to breathe sometimes. But some evenings I just walk down from the hill where our Prague TEFL school is. Long story short, thanks to these walks, I have seen so many sunsets in the past few weeks like no other time this year.
What has surprised you so far (either course related or Prague related)?
The biggest surprise for me was when I realized that, apart from me, there were no other students in the class who were purely Czech. The second surprise was just how intensive and information-packed this course is. I also really like the way the TEFL instructors teach us to work methodically and to bring out the best teacher in ourselves. In addition, they’re all very kind and supportive, which motivates me even more to immerse myself in preparing my own lessons. The school’s location is also a great advantage, and so are the facilities available to us both as studentsand as teachers. Although I know Prague well because I was born here, during lunch breaks I’ve even discovered a few places I didn’t know about at all. Most recently, for example, a Michelin-starred restaurant tucked away in a hidden spot not far from our school.
What are your plans for after the course?
I want to start teaching as much as possible, so I can make the most of what we have learned during the TEFL course. I’d also like to teach not only adults but also children, because I enjoy learning through play, something that perhaps some of us Czechs have in our blood, thanks to Jan Amos Comenius, the ‘Teacher of Nations’, who was already advocating this back in the 17th century.
Join an upcoming TEFL course where in just 4 weeks you too can be teaching English abroad.
