Trainee Stories – Steijha

We asked one of our current trainees, Steijha, a few questions about her experience during the course so far.

Where are you from and why did you choose the Czech Republic?

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and lived in Portland, Oregon for many years. In truth, I chose the Czech Republic largely for visa purposes. I had been living in France and wanted to continue living in Europe, and I learned I could pursue teaching and apply for a year visa without leaving this part of the world.

What do you think of Prague?

Prague reminds me a bit of Portland! I expected to feel disconnected from nature living in this city but my experience has been anything but. There are so many trees and huge parks with amazing views. I thought I would be overwhelmed by its newness, but it’s a relatively small city so I felt comfortable pretty quickly. Plus, Prague is extremely easy to navigate with public transportation.

How are you finding the course so far?

I am finding the course to be a very supportive environment. I appreciate the course’s intensity, which seems to be preparing us for entering the teaching field. All the materials we are provided with, the trainer support, and the daily learning activities feel necessary and useful.

What has surprised you so far (either course related or Prague related)?

I was surprised at how easy it was to get acquainted with everyone in the TEFL course. After the first day, I felt like I had already made some friends. You spend a lot of time with the people in your class and the overall atmosphere has been comfortable and genuine, making it easy for me to create connections with my peers.

What are your plans for after the course?

After finishing the course I hope to stay in Prague and teach for the next year or so. I’d like to find a job teaching kids and young adults and gain some more experience in the field. Then, I hope to return to France to teach some more! For now, I am feeling excited about getting to know Prague.
