We asked one of our trainees, Matthew, a few questions about his experience during the course so far.
Where are you from and why did you choose the Czech Republic?
My wife and I are originally from Ohio but have lived the last 5 years in Florida. We love to travel and have made several trips to Europe. One of our goals had always been to live abroad at some point in our lives. I had worked for 25 years in finance and was looking for a change. We looked at several options abroad for teaching but settled on the Czech Republic because of its culture and central location in Europe. Also my wife will not be teaching but would like to work and the recent law passed in the Czech Republic allows Americans free access to the labor market.
What do you think of Prague?
We have been in Prague for about 3 weeks now and are loving every minute of it. The city is so vibrant and walkable even in the cold temperatures. We have traveled all over the city which is easy because of the excellent public transportation system.
How are you finding the course so far?
I have a somewhat unique story because I already have my TEFL certificate through TEFL.org. I took their online course and passed in the summer of 2024. In order to be placed in Prague and also because I wanted an in-person teaching experience I decided to work with TEFL Worldwide Prague. After one week I realized it was an excellent decision. The depth of the training we receive along with the benefit of interaction with other students has been extremely helpful.
What has surprised you so far (either course related or Prague related)?
I think the most surprising part has been how easy it is to get around Prague without a car. It is amazing that for such a large city you can really get anywhere in about 30 minutes and be dropped off so close to your destination. As an American this was really eye opening.
What are your plans for after the course?
I am applying for a long term visa for business purposes and working on a trade license to start teaching as soon as the course is complete. My wife and I have already secured a 12 month lease of a flat in Vinohrady and are super excited to start our new adventure in Prague.
