We ask one of our current trainees, Liam, a few questions about his experience during the course.
Where are you from and why did you choose the Czech Republic?
I am originally from California, and have spent a decent amount of time traveling around, especially in Europe. I have been to the Czech republic twice before, once to Prague and once to the countryside. Both times I was in love with the environment, and when I found the TEFL program I knew it was the perfect opportunity and meant to be.
What do you think of Prague?
Prague is easily one of my top three favourite cities. It has the liveliness of a large city, lots to do, wonderful public transportation, and feels like a very safe place to live as well. The architecture is incredible, every day as I walk to school or to run errands I am always intrigued by the variations of style that the city has to offer. Plus the food is amazing as well.
How are you finding the course so far?
It is a four week course so I knew it would be a lot of work and it is definitely intense. But the materials given and the support and lessons from the trainers has been extremely helpful. They want you to succeed and are there to give you the information you need to do so. Even when I feel a little lost, the questions in my head get answered shortly after, further solidifying the information and knowledge we are being given.
What has surprised you so far (either course related or Prague related)?
I think I have been most surprised with how understanding people are in the city, I have yet to have a negative experience interacting with people in my time here. Everyone I have met has been so kind in sharing information about how to get around or where the best spots to eat, explore, and good parks to relax in. When I have the opportunity to use the little Czech I know, It is rare that the person will immediately just switch to english. Giving me the chance to feel confident that I was able to get through a short interaction, even if they had to use a couple words in English if I didn’t grasp what they said.
What are your plans for after the course?
I hope to stay in Prague for a while and work with upper level English speakers, possibly with an emphasis on helping with business English. Taking advantage of how central Prague is to travel and make new connections and opportunities everywhere I can. This course has given me the opportunity to expand on my knowledge and is helping gain the confidence and tools to be able to share with others.
