Trainee Stories – Jo

We ask one of our current trainees, Jo, a few questions about her experience during the course.

Where are you from and why did you choose the Czech Republic?

Originally I am from Wales and grew up there until I was 18. After graduating university I moved to the other side of the world and spent 15 years living and working in Australia and Singapore. In 2018 I relocated to London and lived in beautiful Clapham.

What do you think of Prague?

I love Prague. Part of the reason I relocated to London after 15 years in Australia was to be closer to Europe and to be able to spend time European cities. Prague is a pretty and friendly place. It has all the things you need in a big city but is easy to get around and everything is central. I love the huge range of galleries and exhibits as well as being so close to water. Dinner and drinks by river at night is one of my favourite things to do here.

How are you finding the course so far?

The TEFL course is challenging and interesting but also a lot of fun. My trainers are full of knowledge and are great at what they do but are also great people outside of school. They are really great at setting students up for success as teachers and for everything you need to know about life in Prague from apartments to visas to the best place to get a beer.

What has surprised you so far (either course related or Prague related)?

I knew the TEFL four week qualification was an intensive course but I was surprised by how much we learnt in a short space of time. There is so much to learn that it can feel overwhelming in the first couple of days but it quickly starts to fall into place. The course is set out really well and balances intensive learning with fun and with plenty of chance to practice and learn from each other.

What are your plans for after the course?

My immediate plans are to teach Executive Business English, to specialise in this area alongside my work as a Business Writer. In a couple of years I plan to move to Paris. Teaching combined with my other freelance work will give me the freedom and flexibility to enjoy the Parisian life.
