We ask one of our current trainees, Jihad, a few questions.
Where are you from and why did you choose the Czech Republic?
I am Brooklyn, NY born and raised. But I spent the last seven years of my life in New Orleans. So I like to say that I’m an honorary New Orleanian too. I chose the Czech Republic because of its charm. I also consider myself a Bohemian, and here is my fantastic opportunity to live in what was once known as Bohemia!
What do you think of Prague?
Prague is a very charming, dynamic, and well-lived city. From what I understand, Prague now presents itself more as an International City. I hear so many different languages here, have eaten so many international cuisines, and have even seen a sprinkle of English words here and there on placards and advertisements. I feel less like a “foreigner” than I initially feared.
There are days when I wish I could read and communicate more with the community. But I take it day by day. It has been quite an adventure exploring this city and seeing its culture and more come to life.
How are you finding the course so far?
This course is tough! You’re learning methodology, learning to teach and support language skills development, and creating lesson plans and teaching! But I am loving the challenge. Each day is a new opportunity to learn something new. Each week I learn new skills and apply them in a classroom setting.
What has surprised you so far (either course related or Prague related)?
Food shopping has become an adventure! I have become “that person” in the supermarket who is clutching my phone using google translate to figure out what I am purchasing. I almost bought sugar by mistake while seeking flour!
I am happy for the camaraderie that I am having with my TEFL cohorts. We are quite the motley crue. I just sent a text to a couple of cohorts expressing my appreciation to them. I wrote, “I am happy we randomly sat next to each other!”
What are your plans for after the course?
I’m still unsure of my plans for after the course. I am thinking I could provide some tutoring, or teach a few classes a week here in Prague until spring or summer. I want to experience this beautiful city, while being of service to it, until the warm weather comes and I can witness nature come to life here. At that point I will think about next steps.
