We ask one of our current trainees, Hana, a few questions.
Where are you from and why did you choose the Czech Republic?
I am originally from the Czech Republic but I’ve spent almost ten years abroad. I met my partner Craig in England 7 years ago and, since then, we have moved to 4 different countries on 5 different occasions. We were actually eyeing the possibility of moving to Czechia for some time due to the political and economic changes in the UK, but ultimately it was an illness in my family that accelerated our actions. It was rough. We had 2 weeks to consolidate everything, pack up and move. But today, almost 2 years later, we are incredibly happy. The illness mentioned is at least partially resolved and we have an absolutely fantastic opportunity to start a new career.
What do you think of Prague?
Prague is great! It’s so vibrant and full of great restaurants, interesting shops, amazing architecture and a deep history. But it’s also packed with noisy cars and crowds of people. The city is very busy and some people might enjoy this, but I’m certainly not one of them. I live in Liberec, a lovely city surrounded by mountains, and I definitely prefer this more mundane vibe it has. After a while, you realise everyone knows everyone, your favourite bartender remembers your orders and everything feels much more homely. But certainly I’m looking forward to visiting Prague more often in the future. Maybe even for work!
How are you finding the course so far?
It’s absolutely exhausting! On the other hand, the support we get is incredible. The amount of information we have to work with is overwhelming but very valuable. Our tutors are simply fantastic. Every single one of our teachers is so approachable and helpful I literally couldn’t ask for more.
What has surprised you so far (either course related or Prague related)?
Honestly, I didn’t expect this course to be easy, but the workload still caught me off guard. I also didn’t expect we would be able to meet so many people with such a different approach to teaching itself. Every one of our tutors is vastly different and everyone has a different teaching style. From extremely neat and organized to… Let’s say a little bit punk. But it works! And it’s so reassuring to see you can actually stand in front of the whiteboard and be your authentic self.
What are your plans for after the course?
Definitely teaching! I’m also planning to stay in Czechia and work on my career here. At the moment I’m a bit overwhelmed with all the possibilities this course has opened for me, so I’m not sure yet what will be the right thing. I guess I have to go and try as much as possible. And that sounds like a whole lot of fun to me!
