The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.
– Coretta Scott King

One of the many factors of TEFL Worldwide that sets it apart from other TEFL programs is the incredible community

you become a part of as soon as you begin your course. This post will dive specifically into the large network located in Prague, however there are thousands more proud alumni living in all corners of the world.

You officially meet some alumni during week three of the course, but more often than not you will meet them unofficially even earlier than that – in the library, the school office, or just out and about. But the biggest alumni meetup is always the monthly graduation. TEFL students from months and years prior all come together to reunite with old friends, meet the newest members of our tight-knit group, and just have a good time. Your network will expand farther out than you ever thought possible, and the true magnitude of the community you have just become a part of really hits you. It’s exhilarating and overwhelming in all the best ways.

The friendships that develop through the shared experience of leaving everything you know behind to start fresh in a new country can’t be compared to anything else I’ve experienced. Everyone has each other’s backs from the start in terms of logistics – assisting with apartment searches, visa questions, teaching concerns, etc. Then, somewhere between sharing outrageous student stories and debating if Pilsner or Kozel is better, you realize you’ve actually grown really close to these people.

We are often found spread out in a pub sharing our weekly adventures, or chilling on blankets in the park with a beer or some lemonade and never without snacks. We have movie nights and lesson planning parties, bike rides around the city and walks along the Vltava River. There’s always someone to see and something to do.

It’s nice to meet people that come from different backgrounds, diverse in their past experiences, but come together with the common goal of escaping our normal lives and living without the pressure we put on ourselves at home. We don’t put that pressure on anyone here,” shared Brandon Chapman, a February 2022 alum.

Our alumni were asked to give one word that describes the TEFL Worldwide community, and the most common response was, overwhelmingly, “welcoming.” Our group is full of coffee junkies, partiers, gamers, cyclists, musicians, stand-up comedians, readers, writers, homebodies, travelers (of course)…and that’s just scratching the surface. There’s a place for everyone and a family to be found in this beautiful city. June kicked off with a big ‘family reunion’ at a concert – and the band is composed of our alumni!
