Real Talk: Prague’s Public Transport

As Head of Admissions, I answer a lot of questions during interviews and info calls about moving to Prague. One question I get from applicants and visitors alike is about how to get around: do you have a car, how difficult is it to get around, what’s the transport like?

I asked a local Visa/Relocation Agency, Move to Prague, for their information about public transport for those new to the city. Keeping reading for Move to Prague’s “All You Need to Know About Transport in Prague”.

Types of Transport: there are 5 types of public transport in Prague, everything is connected in one system: PID

Tram                   Metro                   Bus                   Boat                   Funicular

Why it’s Good: Prague has one of the best public transport systems in Europe

  • Fast & reliable
  • Covers the whole city
  • Works day & night (with use of night trams and buses)

 Ticket Prices

  • 30 min: 36kc (app) / 39kc (paper)
  • 90 min: 46kc / 50kc
  • 24 hrs: 140kc / 150kc
  • 72 hrs: 340 kc / 350kc
  • Monthly pass: 550kc

How to Buy Tickets: Best way – use the PID Lítačka app

  • Buy tickets in seconds
  • Cheaper than paper
  • Easy to activate

You can also

  • Buy at ticket machines
  • Buy in metro stations
  • Use SMS tickets (Czech SIM)

Important Rules: Don’t forget!

  • Validate the paper ticket BEFORE your FIRST ride
  • Activate your ticket in the app BEFORE boarding
  • Don’t validate twice!

No ticket = FINE! (1,000kc +)

Schedule & Navigation: Transport runs on time

  • Use Google Maps
  • PID lítačka app
  • Many stops now have live timetables

Everything is very punctual.

Useful Tips

  • Kids under 15 = FREE
  • 65+ = FREE
  • Night transport runs all night
  • Funicular to Petřín is included (with valid ticket)
