“No one is perfect. That’s why pencils have erasers.” -Wolfgang Riebe
September is one of my favorite months of the year. The sunlight is buttery, the air is crisp, the wind swirls cool. Another reason why September is one of my favorite months is because it is when “real life” begins again. July and August are behind us, the dreams of sun and sand have disappeared.
In September the year starts again for me, my studentsm and all the teachers I work with.
Starting the year again in September means we get a fresh beginning twice in one calendar year. Whatever skills we’ve been trying to learn, we can buckle down and work harder after the summer pause. Things that felt heavy in May now feel a little lighter because we’ve put them down for a while. It’s important, as teachers and students, to take a break from time to time and start again with renewed energy.
Let’s take this energy into the end of 2025! We don’t expect our students to be perfect, and we shouldn’t expect ourselves to be perfect either. As the quote says, that’s why pencils have erasers.
In September let’s look forward to the excitement of meeting new people and new ideas.
In October there will be plenty of fun to be had with lessons full of ghosts, goblins, and fun vocabulary.
In November our community always celebrates “Friends-giving” together with a feast for alumni and trainees. This is one of my personal favorite events of the year.
In December Prague will be covered in Christmas sparkles and magic.
