Our October 2024 TEFL course just graduated, and before they departed for the last time, we asked them what advice they would give to the new course attendees.
Here’s some of what they said:
- Have fun with the class.
- Rely on your classmates for support.
- Be kind to your students and yourself.
- Embrace flexibility. Not every lesson will go as planned so it is important to be ready to adapt to the needs of your students in the moment.
- Take things one day at a time. Learning a new skill such as teaching takes time to master, and it is normal to make mistakes. The important thing is to learn from the feedback and keep moving forward.
- Trust the process of the course. The information will be given to you in a specific sequence and it’s easy to try to jump ahead and think about the real world.
- It isn’t possible to be an expert in one month. It’s better to view this course as a jumping-off point and accept you will also be learning as you teach.
- Reflect on your lessons after teaching. Identify what worked well and what didn’t. This allows you to improve for next time and have an even more successful lesson.
- Sleep!
- Keep on top of all the assignments, so as not to get overwhelmed by piling up.
- Embrace the feedback, make mistakes and don’t get upset about the feedback. This is how you get better.
- TEFL teaches you a lot and helps you become a teacher but it is up to you to become that teacher.
- Clear your schedule because the program is intense.
- Remember the course is only four weeks.
