Our November TEFL course just graduated, and before they departed for the last time, we asked them what advice they would give to the next course.
Here’s some of what they said:
- Enjoy the process. Teaching is a skill that develops with experience, and when you allow yourself to have fun with it, both you and your students benefit.
- Try different activities while you can.
- Relax. Take the class seriously, but don’t over stress yourself out over it. More often than not, even in my weakest lessons, I felt good up there teaching.
- The best thing you can do is be creative and use your time to figure out what works for you.
- Not to feel discouraged by feedback. It can be overwhelming at first, but if you focus on one or two specific areas to improve each lesson, you’ll see real progress.
- Make sure your lesson plans are written in a way that makes sense to you—your plan should serve as a clear guide during your teaching, not just a formality.
- I would also say to stay on top of the coursework to the best of their ability.
- It is intense and requires focus, but also rewarding. Approaching it with passion makes the difficult moments easier, and enjoying the process helps you appreciate how much you are growing.
- I recommend patience and tolerance: the TEFL method challenges many of the assumptions we were raised and educated with, and it’s bound to make you feel frustrated or like you’re wasting your time once in a while. Just focus on the wonderful traits that each of your instructors has that you’ll certainly want to emulate and try to understand why each aspect of the method is the way it is and which aspect of traditional teaching it might be reacting against.
- Remind yourself that the course is ultimately quite forgiving and your instructors are on your side.
