Our May TEFL course just graduated, and before they departed for the last time, we asked them what advice they would give to the next course.
Here’s some of what they said:
- Arrive in Prague early and give yourself time to settle in and adjust.
- Start your assignments from day one, and do a little each day to avoid stress.
- Trust the process, stay open to feedback, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You’ll grow so much from them.
- Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Every class is an opportunity to learn and find your teaching style.
- Don’t be afraid to steal lesson ideas, activities, and games from your trainers, fellow trainees, and online resources. There is no need to reinvent the wheel for every lesson. Adapt what works and personalize it.
- Take a deep breath. A lot of what doesn’t make sense in the beginning falls into place later.
- Teaching is about human connection and so is learning. I think focusing on the relationships with other trainees is also incredibly important in a course like this. My advice would be to take advantage of that to the fullest and help each other out.
- Never be afraid of asking for help.
- Listen to feedback from the teaching practices and work to improve on all of the areas mentioned during feedback sessions.
- Keep your mind open as you go throughout the course, you never know when you will look at something with a completely new perspective.
Be creative with your activities and be confidant in your ability when teaching your students. - Use your ICQs! At times, during the heat of theteaching moment, I’ve forgotten to ask an ICQ, and students do get confused. They can feel silly or even patronising at times, but an effective ICQ will ensure everystudent can approach the activity at the same time.
- Run your planned activities by your peers. Your peers are your greatest helpers!
In just 4 weeks you can be teaching English abroad.
