Our August TEFL course just graduated, and before they departed for the last time, we asked them what advice they would give to the next course.
Here’s some of what they said:
- Enjoy it whilst you’re here. Prague is stunning and a place to be loved.
- Do your best to make friends with your classmates! It’s better to be stressed with people you like than alone.
- Prepare to have to look at English in a whole new way, and be ready to learn.
- Be prepared to make mistakes, but understand that others have made these same mistakes before and others will make them after you.
- So long as you always strive to do better than you did, you will succeed here.
- Save your brain energy for lesson plans, drink more caffeine than you probably should, and practice teaching your lesson by teaching to a wall.
- Do not forget to take care of yourself and sleep enough. You can only conduct the best lessons when you are in top condition.
- Do not stress about the grading at the start. Nobody expects you to be perfect right from the start and your progress is what matters.
- There are very many people here who want to see you succeed, and as long as you do your best, they will help you to do better.
- Trust the process, take all feedback as a growth opportunity and not to be afraid of failure. Every lesson can’t be a banger, but use it to become better.
- The teachers in the course are willing to help anyone succeed in the program and do an excellent job at not looking at each student equally but fairly. We all have different strengths and they see that, they don’t compare students to each other but instead see us as individuals.
- Be patient with yourself, be open to receiving feedback and relying on the trainers, and to dedicate as much time to the course as you can.
- The teachers are here to support. They want you to ask questions and be interested, being silent doesn’t always mean that you understand.
