Our April TEFL course just graduated, and before they departed for the last time, we asked them what advice they would give to the next course.
Here’s some of what they said:
- Don’t be afraid of brainstorming with other trainees, because that was super helpful!
- Use the resources as much as possible, and if you can find an exercise already made or something that you can tweak, do that as much as you can because it’s easier that way.
- Use the ICQs and CCQs even if they feel silly because they are very helpful when information is unclear to a student.
- Be patient with themselves: it is probably going to be their first time teaching so it’s fine to not be perfect immediately.
- Be patient with their students: they are learning a language, they don’t know it, and that’s the whole point!
- It might get overwhelming but they should really try to enjoy it and take the most out of it.
- Be willing to make mistakes, as this is a very normal part of trying something new. Making mistakes will allow you to see areas you can grow.
- Do the assigned work the same day they got it; reflection essays, observations. The quicker you complete thework, the better it is for you.
- Not to worry; this is a learners’ programme, it’s better to fail at things now with mentors, then try to get everything completely perfect on your first try.
- Try the things that feel the most uncomfortable or “not for you” – you might be very surprised.
- Read the feedback notes carefully when planning your next class.
- Enjoy the course. Even though it’s intense, I’m already finding myself missing it.
- Rules and creativity don’t have to be opposites.
