Another unifyer for a large number of our TEFL graduates is a love of sports. So let’s take a look at the most popular sport here in the Czech Republic; Ice Hockey!
Prague, renowned for its rich history and stunning architecture, is also a haven for ice hockey enthusiasts. The city boasts a vibrant hockey culture, with numerous venues and events that cater to fans year-round. Whether you’re attending a game in person or soaking up the atmosphere in a lively pub, Prague offers an unforgettable hockey experience.

The heart of Prague’s hockey scene is the O2 Arena, home to HC Sparta Prague, one of the country’s most successful and popular teams. Founded in 1903, HC Sparta is a dominant force in Czech hockey, regularly competing for the top spots in the Extraliga. Although not the NHL, there is a fast-paced style and passionate fan base which makes attending a Sparta game an exciting experience.
In contrast, HC Slavia Prague, their longtime city rival, has had a more modest presence in recent years, relegated to the second-tier Chance Liga a few years ago. HC Slavia, founded in 1900, boasts a proud history and a dedicated following, and their games at the Winter Arena offer a more traditional hockey experience. Albeit with better beer than the O2! There are also plenty of opportunities for travel and watch as most of the larger towns and cities in the country have a hockey club with a loyal following.
The pinnacle of Prague’s hockey calendar in 2024 was the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, which took place in both Prague and Ostrava from May 10 to 26. The O2 Arena was the main venue, hosting thrilling matchups that attracted fans from around the world. The tournament was a resounding success, culminating in an unforgettable moment for Czech hockey: the national team clinched the gold medal on home ice. The victory was met with massive celebrations throughout the city, with thousands gathering in Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square to enjoy the victory.
During the championship, fan zones were set up near the arenas, offering free access to live game broadcasts on big screens. These zones created an electric atmosphere, allowing fans without tickets to partake in the excitement alongside fellow supporters. The city’s many sports bars and pubs were packed with fans watching games, sharing pints, and chanting in support of their teams.
Whether you choose to watch a high-energy Sparta game at O2 Arena, experience Slavia’s traditional charm at the Winter Arena, or simply enjoy the sport with locals in a buzzing pub, hockey in Prague is more than just a sport—it’s a way of life. Make sure to catch a game and immerse yourself in the city’s deep passion for ice hockey.
