We asked one of our trainees, Caspar, a few questions about his experience during the course so far.
Where are you from and why did you choose the Czech Republic?
I’m from Cornwall, the UK’s most south-westerly skelf. I wanted to be somewhere completely new, somewhere electric, to throw myself into an environment and see how I landed. A defibrillator for the soul. I also love how the Czech Republic’s position in Europe makes it easy to hop from country to country. Trains are your friend. Lastly, I knew of Czechia, and Prague specifically as a hotspot of amazing literature and filmmaking interested in transnational experiences.
What do you think of Prague?
It’s the bee’s knees. Gleaming city. I love to walk across Štvanice, to follow the river, stomp into a park. The public transport system does a beautiful job, taking you all over the place without the need for an overcomplicated map. Three metro ribbons and a dream. But let’s get down to business: eating. Of course, I’m a Czech food convert #Svíčková4life. But Prague also offers some truly unbelievable Vietnamese restaurants, Georgian dishes, and highly nutritious shawarma. There’s a sense of “why not?” to the city, and I can’t get enough of it.
How are you finding the course so far?
The course has pushed me, it’s an intense experience, and I’ve learned a lot in a very short time. It’s delightful to feel that your trainers can see through any of your personal speaking-to-audience hangups, your invisible mannerisms. And I’ve been educated by my fellow TEFLers, students, my peers (pick your poison). Everybody is so wise and eager. These are long days – I couldn’t do it without them.
What has surprised you so far (either course related or Prague related)?
There’s a real satisfaction when you finally understand why that amazing teacher in school was amazing, why that bad one wasn’t so effective. Also, Prague has a way of throwing surprises at you! The morning tram ride into town provides all kinds of characters and interactions. How good Kofola is. What isn’t a surprise is why so many people stay.
What are your plans for after the course?
After the course, I hope to stay in Prague! I plan to teach English and figure out a way into Czech’s seven cases. Fingers crossed for my visa application. Maybe I’ll fall into a different country in the future, but this is home for now!
