What is Czech Easter like? Well, what better way than to ask a local!
According to Dani (from Czech It Out With Dani): Easter in Czechia isn’t just about chocolate eggs and cute bunnies…It’s a mix of old pagan traditions, Christianity, and some very unique customs you probably haven’t seen anywhere else.
Read below to find out more from Dani about her country’s traditions:
🌸1. What Is Czech Easter Like?
Easter (Velikonoce) celebrates:
- The arrival of spring
- New life and fertility
- And for some, also the Christian meaning of Easter
But Czech Easter traditions are… let’s say… very original 😉
🎀 2. Pomlázka – The Most Famous Tradition
On Easter Monday, boys and men go around visiting girls and women with a pomlázka – a handmade whip made from willow branches. It’s usually made of 6 to 12 branches.
👉 They gently “whip” them
👉 In return, they get:
- Painted eggs (kraslice) 🥚
- Chocolate, cookies or candies
- Sometimes even a shot of alcohol 🍷
💡 It’s supposed to bring health, youth, beauty and fertility to women for the whole year.

🎨 3. Kraslice – Decorated Easter Eggs
Eggs are a HUGE part of Czech Easter.
People decorate them in beautiful ways:
- Painted by hand 🎨
- Wax-decorated
- Scratched designs
- Natural dyes (onion skins, beetroot, etc.)
Each region has its own style, some are real works of art.

⛪ 4. Easter & Church Traditions
For many people, Easter is also a religious holiday.
Important days:
- Zelený čtvrtek (Maundy Thursday) – it’s a tradition to drink or eat something green (you might see green beer🍺)
- Velký pátek (Good Friday) – calm, quiet day, usually shops are closed
- Bílá sobota (Holy Saturday) – preparation, women usually paint the eggs or bake beránek and mazanec and men prepare their pomlázka
- Velikonoční neděle (Easter Sunday) – usually celebrating with the family
- Velikonoční pondělí (Easter Monday) – shops are also closed, the day when men walk with pomlázka and women give them kraslice in return
Some people go to church, especially on Sunday.
🍰 5. Traditional Easter Food
Easter = FOOD
Must -try:
- Mazanec – sweet bread with raisins, similar to Vánočka we eat at Christmas
- Beránek – lamb-shaped cake with candied fruit inside and sometimes chocolate on the outside 🐑
- Nádivka – savory stuffing with herbs and meat
- Vejce (eggs) – in every possible form
Spring herbs are often used — fresh and green 🌱
🏡 6. What to Expect as a Foreigner 😄
If you’re in Czechia during Easter:
- You might hear knocking on your door on Monday if you live in a village or a small town👀
- Boys will recite a rhyme and use pomlázka
- You’re expected to give something in return
If you don’t want to participate, just don’t open the door 😄

- kraslice – decorated eggs
- koleda – Easter rhyme / tradition
