Our September TEFL course just graduated, and before they departed for the last time, we asked them what advice they would give to the next course.
Here’s some of what they said:
- The course will take a lot of time and energy, but it will be worth it.
- As much as you can, try to show your personality in the teaching practices.
- Try to have fun with the lesson planning. If you approach it in away where it is just something you have to do, the final product will not be as good as it would be if you have fun with it.
- Eat healthy (and healthy amounts of) food – take care of yourself in general!
- Do not be scared of your teachers or students.
- Remember, the students are there to learn and the teachers are there to teach you how to teach English. They are not your enemies, they are just wanting you to come out of this experience with as much as possible.
- Manage your time wisely – take the trainers’ advice about this!
- Think about the activities and how enriching they are more than the actual knowledge content.
- Stay on top of your deadlines, don’t let them pile up and stay organised.
- Listening to what works is best.
- Use your free time wisely. Use your time outside of class to work on assignments alongside whatever necessary issues you need to handle, because otherwise you may end up pressed for time when your assignments are due.
- Study at the pub under the school (beer museum) because you get discounts and beer helps.
In just 4 weeks you can be teaching English abroad.
