Our March TEFL course just graduated, and before they departed for the last time, we asked them what advice they would give to the next course.
Here’s some of what they said:
- Trust the process of the course.
- Stay open to new opportunities, learning and re-learning topics, getting to know students and classmates, advice and feedback, and new cultures.
- Allow yourself to grow and have fun!
- Take things one day at a time. Learning a new skill such as teaching takes time to master, and it is normal to make mistakes. The important thing is to learn from the feedback and keep moving forward.
- Not to get overwhelmed by all the things you still aren’t an expert on like grammar points, teaching activities, etc. It isn’t possible to be an expert in one month.
- Embrace the feedback, make mistakes and don’t get upset about the feedback. This is how you get better.
- Have fun with the class, TEFL teaches you a lot and helps you become a teacher but it is up to you to become that teacher.
- Use the resources available as much as you can.
- Be kind to your students and yourself.
- Rely on your classmates for support and remember the course is only four weeks.
- Embrace flexibility. Not every lesson will go as planned so it is important to be ready to adapt to the needs of your students in the moment.
- Focus on clear and direct communication with your students. This will prevent confusion and help students feel more confident in their tasks.
- Reflect on your lessons after teaching. Identify what worked well and what didn’t. This allows you to improve for next time and have an even more successful lesson
In just 4 weeks you can be teaching English abroad.
