What is TEFL?

TEFL is an acronym that stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. A TEFL certificate is the qualification required in order to teach English abroad.

In addition to TEFL, there are other acronyms used for the same qualification needed for teaching English abroad. Here’s an overview for you.

  • TEFL: Teaching English as a Foreign Language (adults and children)
  • CELTA: Certificate in English Language Teaching for Adults
  • TESOL: Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages
  • TESL: Teaching English as a Second Language

TEFL teachers typically work in non-English speaking countries, teaching students who want to learn English as a foreign language.

TESL teachers work in native English speaking countries teaching immigrants, or foreign students, English as a second language. TEFL certified teachers can do this as well. Many of our native English speaking graduates have returned home to the US, UK, Canada, Australia or Ireland to teach English.

A TEFL certificate is the basic requirement for teaching English abroad. Just because you can speak English doesn’t mean that you can teach it. English language schools want to know that you’ve had specific training on how to teach English, and that you have learned the approaches and methodology used for teaching English as a foreign language. Additionally, they want to know that you’ve had hands on teaching experience in a real classroom teaching real students. During the TEFL Worldwide course you will receive plenty of hands on teaching practice, resulting in you feeling more than prepared for your first teaching job.

What do you learn on a TEFL course?

A TEFL certificate course will give you the skills, knowledge and tools needed to deliver an effective English lesson. TEFL courses feature classroom sessions on teaching methodology and at least 6 hours of observed hands on teaching practice by qualified trainers.

At TEFL Worldwide, you will have the opportunity to teach classes and one-on-one lessons with real students of all levels while receiving valuable feedback from your trainers and well as continued support and guidance. During our course, you will receive 6-8 hours of hands on teaching practice with Czech students. The TEFL Worldwide course is designed for both experienced and inexperienced teachers. A second language is not required and non-native English speakers may also apply.

What is TEFL Certification?

TEFL certification is the basic requirement needed for teaching English as a foreign language. As there are many TEFL certification courses offered worldwide, it’s important to know that they don’t all hold the same weight.

If you are interested in teaching English for reputable language schools all over the globe, be sure to choose a TEFL certificate course that is ons-site, Accredited, Moderated and Internationally Recognized. Remember, you get what you pay for.

TEFL Certification Internationally Recognized Standards

A TEFL certificate courses that meets Internationally recognized standards must include the following:

  1. A minimum of 100 hours of training and course work.
  2. At least 6 hours of observed hands-on teaching practice with real students in a classroom.
  3. Qualified trainers.
  4. Accreditation by a recognized organization.
  5. Quality Job Guidance.

Online vs On-site

Online courses are not recognized by most reputable employers. For one reason, you won’t get the necessary teaching practice during the course and you won’t be able to be observed by experienced trainers. This is crucial in order to find out what you are doing right or wrong. For another, most online courses are less than 100 hours. Without the course being more than 100 hours and offering observed teaching practice with real students observed by qualified trainers, the course does not meet the International Standards.

Last, with online courses, you miss out on training abroad, which gives you the real feel of what it is like to be living and working abroad. You won’t have the support and network like you would with an onsite course, and job guidance is usually not provided
