Teach English to Young Learners

2 Day Extension Course

The TEFL course focuses mainly on teaching adults. Although a lot of the methodology and techniques can be applied to teaching children, additional methodology is needed for this (especially for teaching very young children). Therefore, for anyone interested in teaching children, we offer a 2 day extension course for an additional fee. TEFL Worldwide graduates get a discount on the course fee.

Who is this course for?

The course is for people who already have a TEFL certificate (or equivalent qualification) and have some experience teaching adults. No experience of teaching children is necessary but would be useful.

If you have never taught children before, this course will give you the confidence to get started. If you already teach children, the course will give you new ideas and activities you can use in the classroom straight away.

What does the course involve?

The course consists of 12 hours of input over 2 days. The schedule for both days is 9:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:00.

A certificate will be awarded at the end of the course. All 12 hours must be attended and all assignments completed and passed.

What will you learn?

The course will focus on teaching young learners (age 5 – 12) and on the differences compared to teaching adults. The input sessions will look at theory and its practical application with an emphasis on practical application. The course covers a range of topics and will help you to more effectively teach young learners. Here are just a few of the things covered on the course:

Understanding your students

You will get to understand the world of the young learner through basic child psychology concepts of cognitive development and understanding. You will also become familiar with the different learner types of students and be able to produce activities specifically targeted towards those students strengths and interests.

Effective classroom management

You will use the understanding of your students to think about the motivating and demotivating factors when it comes to learning English as a second language.

You will learn skills that will improve your own communication skills with young learners and how to deal with L1 issues and class discipline in a respectful and dignified manner.

You will also be introduced to practical games and activities that either hype the young learners up or chill them out depending on the situation.

It will also give tips on dealing with mixed ability classes and give you the confidence to set a really strong precedence from day one.

Practical and efficient planing

You will learn exactly what, why and how language should be taught in a young learners class through creating a reality based lesson plan for young learners.

You will also learn what to expect from your class in terms of language ability and therefore be able to analyze and utilize existing English books to maximum efficacy.

You will also learn how to integrate basic skills such as speaking, writing, reading and listening into your lessons and create a coherent and varied multiple approach to teaching over a longer period of time.
