Teaching English to Young Learners
The Young Learners Workshop is an additional qualification for teaching English as a foreign language, particularly to students who are between the ages of 2 and 18 years old. Our 4.5 hour workshop provides trainees with insight to the fundamental differences between teaching children verses adults in the classroom. The workshop provides a variety of applicable materials for trainees to modify according to their teaching needs. Trainees also get experience assessing and differentiating each resource, to maximize meaning for individual student level.
The workshop effectively allows trainees to prepare the fundamental components of teaching young learners while having immediate support from an experienced trainer.

- To provide key vocabulary while citing specific differences between the brain of a child and an adult.
- To deliver strategies and considerations in regards to physically arranging the classroom.
- To define TPR and give practical experiences incorporating it into movement, transitions, attention-getters, and classroom directions.
- To demonstrate and prepare writing age-appropriate lesson plans with engaging, motivating, and effective activities that use a variety of methods and resources for different learning styles.

The 4.5 hour workshop includes three intensive sessions. Each session is broken down into different methodological approaches to motivating, managing, and teaching young learners. Trainees are trained on various topics correlated to teaching children, and immediately interact with each supplementary material with the close support of the instructor. The workshop provides insight into what exactly a teacher can expect when teaching children, including language awareness, lesson planning, techniques for engaging students, and student-centered activities. Additionally, it prepares trainees for adapting the tools given, creating personalized tools from scratch, and differentiating lessons to make instruction as meaningful and interesting as possible for young learners.
During this course you will learn how to distinguish exactly what a child needs to learn. It focuses highly on the key elements to keep a child’s brain activated and energized, while learning and what exactly that demands of the teacher. The workshop thrives on the participation of each trainee and their personal contributions in each session. Because of this, each workshop is unique and individualized to the trainees who attend.
Trainees receive a certificate of completion after participating in the workshop. In addition, they also receive an online dropbox resource which can be accessed indefinitely as well as the instructors’ contact information, for individual support or questions for any time in the future.

I graduated with my Bachelors in Elementary Education in 2010. Throughout the 2 years of my teaching program, I spent 3-5 days a week in the classroom teaching, mentoring, and tutoring kids throughout elementary and middle school. I taught 5th graders in Namibia, Africa for 3 months. While there, I created an after school reading program and also co-led two workshops on effective teaching practices. After I graduated with my degree, I began teaching as a substitute right away. I taught all ages of students from elementary to high school. In 2012 I was picked up for a long term position teaching 5th graders for three months while a teacher recovered from breaking her leg…. and literally the day that position ended I was asked to do another long term position as a reading specialist for 6 months (in 2013). Being a specialist, I worked with mostly 1st and 2nd graders but also had groups throughout other grades. I was offered positions at both schools, but declined because I decided to learn how to be a TEFL teacher in Prague instead!
I graduated the course in August 2013, with a distinction certificate, and I started my first position as an English teacher in September. I taught big groups of preschoolers, small groups of business English, and lots of one on one students- ranging from advanced adults to beginner preschoolers to fluent young learners looking for instruction on how to read. In August 2015, I was hired at the Bumble Bee International School teaching 3rd graders in all content areas, not just English.
